Stay at Catalonia’s magical mountain

Just 40 minutes from Barcelona, this stunning mountain is Catalonia’s spiritual heart. Nestled high in it’s spectacular crown the Benedictine monastery is home to a thriving community of monks and also a much-venerated statue of the Black Madonna, the focus of pilgrimages for more than a millennium.

We run private day or half day trips to Montserrat from Barcelona and can provide a gormet picnic of local specialities in a beautiful setting to top the day off.

However we also highly recommend an overnight stay as the best way to get a feeling for how the monestary works and fully experience Montserrat’s spiritual tranquility and sublime natural beauty. The monestary is a working spiritual centre and the monks themselves are keen to remind vistors of this fact as it is also, in large part, what gives it it’s special charisma.

We suggest picking you up in the early afternoon, so that you’ll arrive in Montserrat with plenty of time to enjoy an engaging presentation on its history and legends, followed by a tour of the monastic complex in the company of our expert guide.

You’ll visit the basilica and have a chance to hear the world famous Escolania boys’ choir sing evensong. At the outstanding art museum, which among its huge collection contains works by Picasso, Dalí and Carravagio, our guests enjoy special access to areas which are usually off limits to visitors, and will reveal ex-traordinary treasures dating back centuries.

In the evening, there will be a special tasting session of locally sourced wines, olive oils or honey, followed by dinner the hotel restaurant. For larger groups, we can organise special gastronomic events such as a special tapas evening or a sample the region’s best local dishes.

It’s worth rising early to watch the magnificent sunrise, and, after breakfast, you can take a stroll (or hop on the funicular railway) to the nearest peak to enjoy stunning views which stretch across a breathtaking swathe of Catalonia. There are several kilometres of fantastic walking trails which cross-cross Montserrat, and you may like to spend the day hiking (let us know if you’d like us to organise a picnic hamper) or climbing.

This mystical mountain and it’s monestary hold an important place in the hearts of Catalans. Montserrat has long been one of the most popular girls’ names, and there is a two-year waiting list for marriage ceremonies to be performed under the gaze of the Black Madonna (La More-neta in Catalan) and many people make a cheerful but exhausting 50-kilometre pilgrimage, walk-ing through the night from Barcelona to reach the lofty monastery just as the dawn mists start to rise.

Please Contact Us or call us to book your visit to Monserrat.

We will certainly recommend your services to our friends when they visit your great city and we can’t wait to return for more of the same thing.
